It's one of those books you really need to buy, read (or more like me - highlight everything that gives you that "aha!!" moment, and just so you know, there were a lot of those), get inspired to kick some ass and then leave on your nightstand or coffee table, because it's not only full of good advice but also visually appealing.
As I mentioned, I think, while reading, I highlighted half of the book. That has to mean something, right? Not only that I sort of, maybe (ok, most definitely), have a huge girl-crush on Sophia's brain and generally on the way how she thinks and goes about things, but also, that the book is filled with some kick-ass advise, that's been wrapped up in good sarcasm (book with a good dose of sarcasm and I'm already sold). It's also full with examples from her life, how she "did it" and how it all came together taking it day by day.
For me personally it was easy to relate to her and her early years (not the dumpster diving) - the whole not really fitting in, finding yourself, struggling with survival, not wanting to live by the set rules that are around us and keep us in some sort of invisible cages and the preference to work alone, preferably from home.
Anyway, I really enjoyed Sophia's story and the way how she told it. While reading, it more felt like we were somewhere cozy, sitting on a sofa, drinking Venti Soy no water no foam chai, and, like a big sister, she was telling me to pull it together, start believing in myself and do something about the things that bother me. Also made me more at ease with the decisions that I've made so far (not going to uni after school) and made me regain self-belief that there still is a chance of success and being happy if I kick-ass in something that I like and enjoy.
& now favorite quotes from the book:
- Regardless of what your dreams are, if you listen only to those around you, the chances of your dreams coming true are very small.
- You create the world, blink by blink. It is entirely yours to discover and yours to create.
- Keep reminding yourself
over and over that this is what you want, and you’ll soon find that the more
you know what you want, the less you’re willing to put up with what you don’t.
One of the best things about life—a reason not to go blindly after one goal and
one goal only—is that sometimes it will take you to something that is way
cooler than anything you would have consciously set out to do in the first
place.
- I don’t want you to look up, #GIRLBOSS, because all that looking up can keep you down. The energy you’ll expend focusing on someone else’s life is better spent working on your own. Just be your own idol.
- #GIRLBOSS: Own your style like you own your used car. This means wearing what you like and what makes you feel good. And it means getting dressed for yourself—not your boyfriend, not your friends, not your parents. Here’s one thing the fashion industry probably won’t tell you: Confidence is more attractive than anything you could put on your body.
- Your challenge as a #GIRLBOSS is to dive headfirst into things without being too attached to the results. When your goal is to gain experience, perspective, and knowledge, failure is no longer a possibility. Failure is your invention. I believe that there is a silver lining in everything, and once you begin to see it, you’ll need sunglasses to combat the glare. It is she who listens to the rest of the world who fails, and it is she who has enough confidence to define success and failure for herself who succeeds.
